ShortPaperDescription

CSCS 530 Short Paper (and Term Project Proposal)

Due: 2013 tbA

For this paper you should choose and read 3-4 modeling papers, at least 2/3 of which are ABMs, and write a short (4-6 pages or so) summary of the models and results, and your thoughts about the papers, i.e., what you thought was good and bad about the models, comparisons between the models and results, what you think they left out, etc. One way to think about this paper is that it is practice for writing that "review" chapter of a dissertation, where you survey what has been done and what they left undone. (And by implication, what you intend to do.)

You can choose any papers/models you want (subject to the constraint mentioned above), but my suggestion is that you choose models/papers that are related to your term project proposal and the term project itself. That is, for the term project you need to write a short proposal, and thus you could use the readings/summarization for this short paper as preparation for the term project proposal, and for the term project paper, too. Knowing what others have done, and thus what interesting questions that are doable remain, is a large part of the choice and planning of a modeling project. Also, for the term project you will be writing a "conference style" paper, one part of which is a brief review of related work, so you could view this paper as background reading for your term project and laying the groundwork for that part of the term paper.

However, if you wish you may write this short paper on any models you choose, not necessarily ones related to your term project. Note that if you do read/summarize papers not related to your term project for your "short paper" assignment, you will still want to read some papers as background for deciding what to propose for your term project.
