A Few Books on Chuang Tzu
- A. C. Graham, Disputers of the Tao. (A general history of
ancient Chinese philosophy, leaving off around the Han Dynasty.)
- Fung Yu-lan, A History of Chinese Philosophy, trans. Derek
Bodde. (The Short History, by the same author and translator,
is a one-volume abridgement. Both cover the entire period from the earliest
times to the start of the 20th century, as does Needham.)
- Joseph Needham, Science and Civilisation in China,, volume II:
History of Scientific Thought. (The late Dr. Needham was as a god
to the history of science, but his views on Chuang Tzu and the other Taoists
are, to say the least, eccentric.)
- Arthur Waley, Three Ways of Thought in Ancient China.
[Translates many of the most interesting parts of Chuang Tzu,
with commentary intended for general readers.]
- Burton Watson, Chuang Tzu (has translated both the Basic
Writings and the Complete Works)
